"MAKING A GOOD IMPRESSION: Assembling a Portfolio-Part II"
Tip # 2: "What to Include in Your Presentation" by Anita Winstanley-Roark

In this article I'm going to backtrack to describe what you should include in and how to put together your gallery presentation.  First of all, you should lay your artwork out in a well-lit room where you can back up to view it.  While viewing it, pretend you are looking at it as if it were the work of someone else.  Study the work and be honest with yourself.  Then ask yourself the following questions: Which have the strongest compositions and technical skills?  Which pieces do you feel best represent your work and talents?  Don't let your emotions sway you but look with a critical eye and then select 15 to 20 pieces that you feel are your best works of art.  After you have made your initial selection  have your mentor or another artist you respect review these works. Be willing to pay for this service unless they offer to do it for free.  Keep in mind that they are taking time from their work to help you establish yourself and the fee is worth it if you get into a good gallery.

After they have narrowed it down for you to about 8 to 10 works of art you can be sure you now have the best of your art.  Take this to a professional photographer or photo shop to have 35mm slides and at least a couple of sets of duplicate slides done.  You will keep the original slides and use the duplicate slides to send out.

When you have the slides go through these once again and select your best out of them.  You want your portfolio to open with your best work, put the weakest in the middle, and close with a strong finish.  Be sure to label each slide with the title, size, medium, your name, and phone number.

When you have your slides assemble in a slide sheet you then need to write your biographical information.  This is not a resume but a descriptive essay about you and your work.  Include such information as where you are from, your art background and education, show or galleries you've exhibited in, your objectives, and of course any glowing reviews of your work by reviewers or newspapers.  Have a resume prepared as some directors do require this as well.  Again, be sure to proof read and then have a friend proof read it to correct any grammatical and spelling errors before typing it on nice paper.  Make sure you have your name, address, web page address, e-mail address and phone number on all information you send out.   Then write a nice letter of introduction asking the gallery director to contact you if interested or to return the slide if not.  Be sure to include a typed, self-addressed return envelope if you want your slides back.

Remember that that if you show professionalism and pride in your work others will take note of it, too!

I welcome any comments by fellow gallery directors or any questions or comments artists may have.  You may direct your commentary to me at: wrfa@masterfulart.com
