"MAKING A GOOD IMPRESSION: Assembling a Portfolio-Part III"
Tip # 3: "Matting and Mounting" by Anita Winstanley-Roark

Your art is ready and you've selected your best works for you portfolio and a gallery has called to view the actual works of art.  You need to present your works so they look professional.

For photographers or other artist that work on paper it is acceptable to present your work to the director of a gallery mounted on 100% acid-free rag board with a simple 100% acid-free rag mat.  For presentation purposes I recommend a simple clean white mat.  The art should be mounted using acid-free mounting corners, DO NOT use tape.  By using the corner it allows you to easily remove your art from the mounting board without damaging the art.  By selecting a simple but clean presentation you have given the gallery director the opportunity to guide you as he/she see best for further framing options that will best sell your work to their clientele.

If your work is in oil or acrylic then it is best to select nicely finished frames, weather it be gold, silver, or wood.  I recommend using the best framing that your budget allows.  By showing pride in your work you instill in others the confidence you have in your work.  This has a trickle down effect that is passed on to the sales of your work.  Customers do not wish to buy a work of art that they need to reframe and a good gallery director knows this.  The customer has already spent money on the art and wants to take their new acquisition home and hang it up right away.  So don't lose sales by thinking the art should sell itself.  You have to do your part in selling your work and any gallery should be happy to have an artist who is aware of this.  Just remember to adjust the price to reflect your framing cost.

I welcome any comments by fellow gallery directors or any questions or comments artists may have.  You may direct your commentary to me at: wrfa@masterfulart.com
