Tip # 4: "Pricing Your Art For Sales In A Gallery" by Anita Winstanley-Roark

One of the most common questions we receive from artists who are showing their work in galleries for the first time is, "How much should I charge?"  There is no way to pin point the exact price for which a beginning artist's work should sell.  However, there are a few things that the artist should bear in mind when determining his/her price.

First, ask how much commission a particular gallery will take.  The average commission can range from 40% to 60%, depending on the gallery and how much advertising and promoting it will do for you.  You need to keep this in mind when selecting your gallery.  It is usually better to pay a little more gallery commission if that gallery is going to promote you and your art with good advertising.  As you develop easy name recognition your art should become more collectable, thereby raising the price!

Your second consideration is the time spent creating the art.  Be reasonable when you're first getting started.  Remember, you need to establish yourself in the selling market and this will take time.  You may have to start with a lower price than you'd like but as your recognition grows so will your prices.

The third factor that will affect your price is your materials and framing cost.  A rule of thumb is to double your expenses to insure you are covering them.  You may need to be willing to break even with your costs and time when first getting established.

Like any business, you have to be willing to invest into your future and you may be in the red at first.  If you hang in there and keep at it you should see improvement with time. So start creating and then get a pencil and paper and start calculating!
