"THE ART OF ILLUSION: Trompe L'Oeil Painting Techniques"
Part II: Tools of the Trade by Robert K. Roark
clean them thoroughly after each day's work! Keep in mind that with "fool the eye" painting, textures are rendered literally - they are not "suggested" as in more impressionistic styles of painting.
"Red Peppers", o/p, 5"x7", by Robert K. Roark
Now that the painting surface has been prepared, we can turn our attention to a few other "tools" that we will need in order to create a true trompe l'oeil oil painting.
Virtually all of your work will be done using small sable brushes of various shapes. When you are laying down your initial coat of paint, larger bristle brushes can come in handy, both for covering large areas rapidly and for creating interesting textures. Watercolor brushes of pure sable are your most useful tools. They are expensive, so
A mixture of 1/3 linseed, 1/3 damar, and 1/3 turp is a good medium for the first coat of paint. For subsequent layers, try a mix of 2/3 linseed and 1/3 damar. Be careful not to use too much medium as it will produce slick surfaces that are difficult to paint over. Should spots on the painting dry dull, bring them back with a light spray of retouch varnish. Again, use this product judiciously.
A few other incidental tools can come in quite handy. For the initial drawing try using a mechanical pencil with a medium hard 5mm lead. Render your drawing in a precise, definitive manner, not "loose" or "sketchy". A good quality 24" T-square is very useful along with an assortment of clear, plastic triangles. A 36" mahl stick is a must. Choose round or flat and smooth out any sharp edges before using. For the finest detail work, use a headband with built-in magnifiers that flip up and down. A good compass, circle and oval templates and a set of French curves can all be put to good use.My next article will cover tips on how to "fool the eye".
