"PREPARING YOUR ART PRESENTATION"
by Robert K. Roark
At one time or another most artists are faced with the dilemma of getting their work into a quality gallery for display and sales. An artist's chances of being accepted by a gallery are greatly enhanced if the initial presentation of artwork is professional and properly timed. When making an in-person presentation, an appointment is mandatory. Never walk into a gallery unannounced with armloads of artwork. On first contact most galleries prefer seeing 6 to 8, 35 mm slides or good quality photographs. All presentation materials should be labeled with title, size, medium and retail price. Each slide or photo should bear the name, address, and telephone number of the artist.
Along with your slides or photos, be sure to include a business card, biography, awards list (if any) and, if available, a photograph of yourself at work.
Be prepared to leave your "packet" with the gallery or, should the gallery request, have several pieces of original artwork ready for viewing.
In closing, remember that galleries need artists as much as artists need galleries. Professionalism will usually win the day. And good luck!
