"THE ART OF ILLUSION: Trompe L'Oeil Painting Techniques"
Part I: Getting Started by Robert K. Roark

The Trompe L'Oeil painting Pictorial Images by Mr. Robert K. Roark. "Pictorial Images", o/p, 20"x21",  by Robert K. Roark
The objective of Trompe L'Oeil painting is to fool the viewer into believing that the depicted objects are actually real and not merely pictures painted on a two dimensional surface.  The artist employs a number of techniques and materials to achieve this goal.

Contrary to popular belief, Trompe L'Oeil is usually not painted on an ultra-smooth surface.  Most paintings in this genre are carried out on a rigid, wood panel.  The texture of even the  smoothest canvas would tend to interfere with the illusion that the artist is creating.

An ideal support on which to work is a prepared Masonite panel cut to size.  Start by roughening the edges and both sides with 100-grade sandpaper.  Clean the surfaces thoroughly after sanding.  Apply a thin coat of undiluted gesso to both sides of the board as well as the edges.  continue with two more coats of gesso, sanding with 150-grade between coats and finishing with 220-grade.

Note:  It is important that the entire board be gessoed initially.  This equalizes the tension created by drying and prevents warping.  Seal the edges carefully to keep bits of masonite debris from drifting onto the painted surface.

In order to hold the paint, the finished surface should have a slight tooth, but avoid any pronounced texture.  Because it is difficult to describe a perfectly-prepared painting surface, experience in this area is all-important.

In upcoming articles I will discuss other materials used in Trompe L'Oeil oil paining along with certain techniques, "tricks" and "secrets"!
