MEDICAL DOCTOR'S AVOCATION IS SUBJECT OF ART MUSEUM TALK

"Dr. William Glysson" o/c (1747-1790) by Winthrop Chandler Besides x-raying and examining patients for nearly fifty years, Dr. Stefan C. Schatzki, who recently retired as chair of the Mt. Auburn Radiology Department in Cambridge, was also maintaining an unusual avocation that he will reveal during the next "Tuesdays with the Muse" program, October 24, 7PM, at the Cape Museum of Fine Arts. In his slide presentation and talk called "The Art of Healing: Medicine in American Art," Dr. Schatzki will explore how American artists have depicted subjects related to the healing arts from the mid-seventeenth to the late twentieth century.  Besides such familiar painters as Winslow Homer, Thomas Eakins and John S. Sargent, others will include Winthrop Chandler, John Sloan, Maxfield Parrish and lesser known figures. Most works will be oil on canvas. A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Harvard and an honors graduate of its Medical School, Dr. Schatzki has published nearly 60 articles about his artistic interests. He has also held a number of editorial positions in publications serving his medical profession. Dr. Schatzki is now a research volunteer in the Department of Drawings at the Fogg Museum, primarily studying the career of the American Pre-Raphaelite painter, Charles Herbert Moore. A resident of Lexington, Dr. Schatzki has been a frequent visitor to Cape Cod. The CMFA is located on the grounds of the Cape Playhouse, Route 6A, Dennis. Admission is $5 for members, $8 for others.
